John Hicks 1941-2006
by Barry Wallenstein

John's gone
here comes John
take me by the 12 table
take me by the 5
take me by the 12 table
take me by the 5
bring him back alive

John
to hear him full-bodied laughing
No, I can't hear it well enough
to bring him back

...bring him back to live

rum & coke and spice of lime
is all I'm taking in --
-- is a tune John could have sang
had he thought of it.

***
I mean – it's been taken in
and I've been rinsed
since
the doctors of science
some with love in their pockets too
have been at my side and closer too

but all those years of taking in
have now put me out

it's too late to retrace a step
take back one sip
or fix myself differently

how could I
how can you?

OK let's go -- a one, a two and a one two three...

Barry Wallenstein's new CD, Euphoria Ripens is out on Cadence Jazz Records. It is dedicated to John Hicks and this the elegy to him performed on the disc.
